Communist bask in the Wigan sunshine

On what must have been one of the hottest days of the year (so far), Greater Manchester communists enjoyed a lively and fruitful day out at the 2nd annual Wigan Diggers Festival on the Wiend. After setting up the stall opposite the half constructed stage at 10.30am, we enjoyed what turned out to be a extremely successful event, raking in almost £60 in literature sales and distributing well over 100 Country Standard Newspapers for free over the course of the day which eventually ended for most of us around 5pm.

In addition to this, the Morning Star stall, which despite the initial non show of papers (they eventually showed up via the Unison office!), took over £80.

With an estimated 2,000 people browsing stalls, drinking guest real ale, and taking in the many variations of music, poetry and speeches that came from the now completed stage, the atmosphere was relaxed and jovial. Perhaps, even the usually antagonistic punters ("well, communism, nice idea but it'll never work"...yes, not heard that one before) were in the mood for a bit of light banter once engaged in a bit of debate.

All in all, an excellent day out, and for those that didn't get to enjoy it this time, an event worth attending next year
