Benny Rothman, Kinder Scout and The Right to Roam

Members of Greater Manchester CPB marked the 80th anniversary of the Mass Trespass of Kinder Scout by joining a Morning Star fundraising walk to the top of the famous Peak District hill. The walk followed the route from Hayfield taken by Manchester communist Benny Rothman and his comrades in 1932.

To commemorate the achievements of the trespassers the CPB has published a new pamphlet called Benny Rothman and Kinder Scout 1932-2012. The pamphlet recounts the events of the Mass Trespass and also outlines Benny's later trade union work and environmental campaigning in the Manchester area. The pamphlet is available either from Greater Manchester branch or from the CPB website.

The Mass Trespass is now widely regarded as a pivotal moment in the fight for the right to roam our open moorland. It also led to the post-war legislation which formed the National Parks we now take for granted.
